Silver gelatine print on genuine vellum - Photography © Björn Albert

The Berlin photographer Björn Albert (ba|ap), who has been using, perfecting and training special analogue photography processes for many years, has produced a print of a photograph on genuine parchment using the silver gelatine process. This is a technique in which light-sensitive silver halides are bound in gelatine (collagen) as a binding agent. The layer is applied and exposed to light. The procedure is basically the same as with paper, except that parchment, with its special material properties, poses a particular challenge in terms of preparation and handling during the wet/dry processes during development. The finished print is translucent and can be applied freely or against a white background. The structure of the vellum remains recognizable. Very high-quality parchment from musical instrument making is reused for this work. Frames are made individually, as the high tension of the material must be taken into account.
